Coughing can be very irritating especially when the cough is persistent. A cough is good because it helps to keep the throat and airways clear. In some cases excessive coughing can be an indication of an underlying medical condition. A more productive cough is a cough that brings out mucus. Coughing is usually a sign of a common cold, but sometimes can be brought on by allergies or asthma. Most coughs are not serious and can be treated with simple home remedies. Keep in mind though that a cough that goes on for more than a week along with a headache or fever should be evaluated by a doctor.
Home made cough syrup
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 Tablespoon of honey
1 Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons water
Mix all the ingredients together and take by teaspoon. Most coughs only require 1 teaspoon each day, but for a more aggressive persistent cough you can take up to 3 teaspoons. Small children should have no more than 1 teaspoon each day. Do not give honey to children under the age of 1 year. If you have any concerns be sure to speak with your doctor.
Coughing up mucous can be good so allow yourself to do this and never swallow the mucous. Allow your body to do what it needs to do and your cough will be gone much sooner.
Be sure to stay well hydrated. It can be helpful to boost your immune system by taking extra vitamin C and eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
