Leg cramps are a contraction of a muscle in the leg which is involuntary. They can be very painful and the cramp can become even tighter if you try to move. Water
Many people who have frequent leg cramps are often very dehydrated. Be sure to drink 8 to 10 glasses of pure water each day. If you work out or sweat a lot drink even more water. It can also be helpful to keep your electrolytes in balance by drinking sports drinks.
Nutrition
Leg cramps have been linked to nutritional deficiency especially with calcium, magnesium and potassium. Be sure to take a whole food multivitamin and mineral supplement daily along with extra calcium and magnesium. Eating a banana each day can help to normalize potassium levels. Eat a well balanced diet with plenty of lean meats, fruits and vegetables.
Stretching
Be sure to always stretch properly before exercising and even before going to bed at night. Stretching can really help to prevent leg cramps and get extra oxygen to the muscles.
