Head lice are very tiny insects which live and thrive on the human scalp as well as animals and some plants. They are spread by sharing brushes, close contact with other people, or sleeping on infected bedding. Lice can be spread very easily and require aggressive and sometimes several repeat treatments to get rid of them entirely. There are many home remedies which are not as harsh as the chemicals in the store which can effectively treat head lice if used correctly.
Dealing with head lice involves more than just getting it out of your hair. You will also need to boil all your brushes and combs, wash all the sheets and clothing with super hot water, treat the pets, bed and carpeted area. After washing everything place the items in large plastic bags that contain cedar chips to prevent re infestation. Cedar is known to kill lice and after you have done all the work of washing you want to preserve what you have done and try to kill of any extra that may want to jump back on the clothing. Some cedar lice treatments may also be available on line. If all the lice in the entire home are not killed they will be back with a vengeance within 2 to 3 weeks.
Home Remedies for Lice
Ingredients- Rubbing Alcohol and Vinegar
Mix the two solutions together and then soak your in the solution for 5 minutes. Keep the mixture on your hair and then place a shower cap on your head to prevent the lice from getting off. Keep the cap on your head for up to 30 minutes or longer. Then wash it out and comb your hair with a metal toothed comb.
Ingredients: White vinegar and Listerine
Combine the two ingriedients and then saturate your hair with it. Place a shower cap on your head for 1 hour. Wash out the mixture and repeat if necessary.
Tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner is a wonderful remedy which helps kill lice in the early stages. Use can also use this oil on your head or your child’s scalp as a preventative measure. If the infestation is very bad then the remedy can just work to complement other remedies.
Ingredients: Vaseline and Mayonnaise
Combine the two ingredients together to make a very gooey paste. Apply directly to the entire scalp and place a shower cap on the head. This works to smother and kill all of the lice that are alive on the head. It works by literally suffocating them. After leaving the mixture on your hair for 1 hour wash your hair thourghouly. You can also leave the Vaseline on over night if that is your choice. If you put too much Vaseline on the hair and the shampoo is not washing out you can use baby oil on your hair to remove it. This treatment may not kill all of the eggs so be sure to comb all the eggs out after all the live bugs are dead. You can also use this treatment combined with another remedy to kill everything. You can buy special combs at the store which can help to grab and remove the eggs. Repeat this treatment if necessary. While doing this treat the entire house to prevent re infestation.
You can buy cedar sprays on line which can be sprayed on the carpet and mattresses to kill lice and their eggs. Do this in addition to boiling and washing everything.
