The Gift of Motherhood
A Healthy Pregnancy is the ultimate goal of many mothers. Pregnancy is one of the most exciting and rewarding times in a woman's life. This very special time represents new life waiting to be born and hope for what that life is to become. If you’re pregnant already or trying to become pregnant you may have many things on your mind. There are many things you can do to increase your chances of having a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby.
Before you actually conceive it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about how to prepare your body for pregnancy. One of the best things you can do is start to build healthy habits now. This will help to prepare your body for the challenge of pregnancy and help increase your chances of a good outcome. By making healthy changes now, you will start to develop healthy habits which you will take through your pregnancy.
Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy
*Take a whole food multivitamin and mineral supplement. Be sure that your multi contains over 400 mcg of folic acid. Folic acid has been show to dramatically reduce the incidence of birth defects such as Spinabifida.
*Drink 8 to 10 glasses of purified water each day
*Try to maintain a healthy weight range for your height. Your doctor can help you to determine what range your in and if you should gain or lose a few pounds.
*Take organic salmon oil or fish oil every day. Be sure to find a brand that doesn't contain any mercury and guaranteed for purity. Studies show that fish oil especially salmon oils helps to prevent blood from becoming too thick in addition to helping your blood flow more freely and helping the fetus to get plenty of nutrients. This has been shown to help prevent miscarriages and ensure a healthy pregnancy. You can take salmon oil thorough your entire pregnancy.
*Eat a variety of Healthy Organic fruits and vegetables daily. You can also start juicing some of your favorite fruits and veggies. Keep in mind that the only fruit you can mix with vegetables are apples. Otherwise it’s always best to keep fruits and vegetables separate in juice form.
* Get plenty of rest. Remember that your body is working hard to build a baby and you need your rest. Strive to get 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. You will most likely feel the most tired in your first trimester because this is when your body is working the hardest to nourish the fetus.
* Keep moving-Whether you like to go biking, swimming, walking or already have a daily work out routine. Be sure to get some exercise daily. The only exercises to avoid during pregnancy are aerobic and exercise which is too strenuous or involves any type of jumping. Swimming and walking are among some of the best exercises to do during pregnancy.
* Take time out for yourself. Be sure to reduce stress and take time out to relax. Take a hot bath with your favorite book or just lay out in the sun. Do whatever works to help you stay calm and collected while you wait for your little one to be born.
* Maintain healthy blood pressure. Studies show that women who maintain normal blood pressure during their pregnancies have much healthier babies. Sometimes medications are needed to keep blood pressure in normal range and your doctor can prescribe a medication which will not harm the fetus.
* Don't clean with chemicals. Switch to healthier brands that contain natural plant extracts and enzymes. A great brand is Seventh Generation. You can find more natural cleaning products at most local health food stores or on line.
* Don't Smoke. If you currently smoke, ask your doctor for help on how to kick the habit. If you quit smoking it will help to ensure a healthy mother and healthy baby. Smoking during pregnancy passes harmful chemicals and nicotine to your baby which are potentially cancer causing. Cigarettes have several harmful chemicals in them that can impair the immune system and lung function. It also raises the risk of stillbirth and can cause low birth weight.
* Don't drink alcohol. Alcohol in excessive amounts can cause harm to baby such as fetal alcohol syndrome. This is described as a group of birth defects that cause children to have mental and behavioral problems as well as some physical abnormalities particularly in the face. This effect lasts an entire lifetime and is not reversible.
Disclaimer: Please be sure to consult your doctor on any and all issues regarding your pregnancy. Although these may be good general pregnancy tips, every pregnancy is very different, and each deserves the attention of a doctor or health care provider.
